What is Gregg Shorthand?

Gregg Shorthand, created by John Robert Gregg, is a pen-based stenography system that became widely popular in the early 20th century. For decades, it was a staple in high school and business education, used by secretaries, journalists, and court reporters to write at incredible speeds. However, with the rise of mechanical stenography and digital recording, shorthand gradually faded from the public eye.

Today, most people have never seen or heard of Gregg Shorthand, yet it remains one of the most efficient and beautiful writing systems ever developed. Whether you're interested in note-taking, journaling, historical study, or simply writing faster, Gregg is a skill that’s worth reviving.

There are multiple versions of Gregg, each designed for different needs. To begin, we will primarily focus on learning the Gregg Anniversary Edition (1929)—widely considered the best balance between speed and readability.
